A 500-metre fatberg was cleared from a sewer beneath Poyle Road near Heathrow Terminal 5 on 19 March 2026. Five hundred metres. That's roughly the length of five football pitches, sitting in a pipe, quietly choking the system while the businesses above it got on with their day.
Thames Water engineers noted something specific when they pulled it apart: fat deposits accumulate faster in sewers that stay full for long periods, because there's nowhere for the warm, semi-liquid grease to go. It cools, it congeals, it bonds with wet wipes and food waste, and it grows. The Poyle Road sewer serves an area dominated by industrial units, catering suppliers, and airport-perimeter food businesses. Not a residential street. Commercial premises.
That detail matters for every café, restaurant, takeaway, and light-industrial food unit in Bracknell.
What a Fatberg Actually Is
The word sounds almost comedic, which is part of the problem. People hear 'fatberg' and picture something dramatic and distant, a headline problem for London's Victorian sewers. It isn't. It's what happens when cooking oil, grease, and fat get poured or rinsed down a drain and meet the calcium in wet wipes, food debris, and sanitary products further down the pipe.
The chemistry is straightforward: saponification. The fat reacts with alkaline materials and hardens into something close to soap, except it's not washing anything clean. It's blocking everything solid.

You see a narrowing of the bore, sometimes gradual, sometimes abrupt, where the pipe wall is coated in a grey-white deposit that looks almost like paint. In profile, the pipe that should be circular starts to look oval, then pear-shaped, then you're looking at a five-centimetre aperture where there should be a 150mm pipe.
At the joints, especially on older clay pipes which are common in Bracknell's earlier-built estates and industrial areas, the grease locks in debris and accelerates root ingress. The tree roots find the moisture, squeeze through the joint, and then the FOG deposit traps everything that comes along behind them. What started as a grease coating becomes a full structural problem.
