Frozen Blocked Drains Bracknell | Winter Survival Guide

Frozen pipes, flooded gullies and winter blockages hit Bracknell hard. Here's what to check before you call a drain engineer.

Last January I pulled a solid plug of ice and compacted leaf mulch from a gully outside a semi in Harmans Water. The owner had no idea the gully was blocked until his garage flooded. Two days of freeze-thaw was all it took.

Berkshire winters aren't the Arctic, but they're nasty enough. We get ground frost from November through to March, the odd sharp cold snap that drops to minus six or seven, and then those wet grey weeks where everything thaws and the water has nowhere to go. That combination is what breaks drains and floods properties across RG12 and out into Warfield, Binfield and Crowthorne.

Here's what to check before it all goes wrong.

Work through these before the temperature drops

Gullies first. Lift the grid on every gully around your property. If there's more than a centimetre of silt and leaf debris in there, clear it by hand or call us for a gully clearance. A blocked gully in a freeze becomes a solid plug. Water backs up, finds the path of least resistance, usually under your door.

Check your external pipework for lagging. Soil pipes that run on the outside of a wall, common on older Easthampstead and Bullbrook houses, are the first to freeze. Foam pipe lagging from any builders' merchant is cheap. Wrap anything exposed that you can reach safely from the ground.

Know where your rodding eye is. If a section of drain freezes and then floods when it thaws, you or an engineer needs to get access fast. Walk the line from your kitchen and bathroom out to the manhole and make sure nothing is buried under a decade of topsoil. I've found them under patio slabs, plant pots, a child's sandpit. You name it.

Manholes in Wildridings and Priestwood. Older estates tend to have shallow brick manholes with cast iron covers. Lift yours now and check the benching isn't already part-blocked with debris. If there's standing water in there and it's not raining, something upstream is already partially blocked.

Root intrusion gets worse in winter. Tree roots follow warm water. In cold weather the pipe itself contracts slightly around an existing root mass and cracks can open up. If you had a slow drain last summer and ignored it, winter will make it a proper blockage. A CCTV survey before December is worth every penny.

Don't pour boiling water down a frozen exterior pipe. Lukewarm water, yes. Boiling, no. The thermal shock cracks clay and older PVCu pipes. I've reline jobs in Crown Wood that started with someone's good intentions and a kettle.

Grease solidifies faster in cold weather. Kitchen drains in Great Hollands and Birch Hill, same as everywhere else, slow right down in winter because the fat that half-made it through in October just stops in the pipe when the temperature drops. Don't pour cooking fat down the sink at any time of year, but especially not now.

Know the signs of a freeze before it fully blocks. A gurgling toilet when you run a tap, slow-draining sinks across multiple rooms at once, a smell coming from external gullies. Any of those in cold weather means act now, not in the morning.

If it's already frozen

Stop using the affected drain. Running more water into a frozen section forces it to back up somewhere, usually somewhere you don't want. Call an engineer. We carry jet washing equipment that can clear ice blockages safely, and we'll camera survey the line to check nothing has cracked in the process.

Steve Marsh, Lead drainage engineer

Steve has been clearing drains in and around Bracknell for over two decades. He has rodded, jetted and dug up most of the pipework in the RG postcodes, and he has strong opinions about what really blocks a drain and what people only think blocks it.

Questions people actually ask

External soil pipes and gullies can start to freeze once air temperature drops below minus two or three Celsius, especially overnight. The real risk is pipes on exposed north-facing walls with no lagging, or shallow surface gullies already packed with debris. Underground drains at normal depth are unlikely to freeze unless there's a prolonged cold snap below minus five for several days, which does happen in Berkshire but isn't common.
